Train Cancellations and Replacement Traffic: What Travelers Need to Know in Dresden From Friday

Train cancellations and replacement traffic in and around Dresden from Friday: What travelers need to know

From Friday to Sunday, train passengers have to be prepared for train cancellations, replacement traffic and timetable changes between Dresden-Neustadt and Bad Schandau. These are the main changes.

Dresden/Leipzig. Due to extensive expansion work on the electronic signal box in Dresden, rail traffic to and from Dresden Central Station is severely affected from Friday to Sunday. The reason is the installation of a new power supply in the signal box, said Deutsche Bahn. The route in the Elbe valley to Bad Schandau will also be affected.

The consequences are diversions, failures, replacement services and changes in travel times. During the conversion period, the signal box was not fully functional. For this reason, trains could temporarily not use Dresden Central Station at all from August 25th. In addition, the route in the Elbe valley will be completely closed to ensure the commissioning of the electronic signal box in Bad Schandau.

How is public transport affected?

The regional trains on the RE1, RE2, RB60 and RB61 lines between Dresden-Neustadt and the main station have been canceled since August 19th. This affects travelers with the Trilex on the Dresden-Görlitz and Dresden-Zittau routes. Travelers should use the S-Bahn trains in the Dresden network as a replacement. On Friday, August 25, these regional trains and also the S8 between Dresden-Neustadt and the main station will be replaced by buses. There is also rail replacement service for the S1 and S2 lines, but on the longer route between Dresden-Neustadt and Dresden-Reick. Buses also connect the regional lines RE3 and RB 30 as well as the S3 between Dresden-Plauen and the main station. The trains on the RB31 line between Dresden-Friedrichstadt and Dresden-Neustadt are canceled and replaced by buses between Dresden-Friedrichstadt and the main station. The trains on lines RE15 and RE18 between Coswig and Hauptbahnhof will be cancelled. Deutsche Bahn recommends that travelers use the RE50 and S1 lines instead, which continue to travel to Dresden-Neustadt. From August 25th to 27th, the trains on line RE50 between the main station and Schöna will be canceled without replacement. The S1 between Bad Schandau and Schöna will be replaced by buses that go to the Schmilka border crossing. The trains on line U28 between Bad Schandau and Schöna have also been cancelled. Instead, buses run between Děčín and Bad Schandau. Without a replacement, the RE20 line will be canceled on August 26 and 27 between Dresden Central Station and Děčín. S-Bahn trains serve as a replacement. Instead of the trains on the RE3, RB30 and S3 lines between Dresden-Plauen and the main station, there are buses. The trains on the RE50 line fall on the nights of 26./27. and 27./28. August between Dresden-Mitte and the main train station. Travelers should switch to the S-Bahn.

What is changing in long-distance transport?

From August 25th to 27th, long-distance trains will run in the direction of Berlin/Warnemünde, Frankfurt am Main/Wiesbaden and Cologne/Stuttgart to and from Dresden-Neustadt. There is no stop at the main train station. The EC trains in the direction of Prague do not run between Dresden-Neustadt or the main station and Děčín. Between Dresden-Neustadt and Ústí nad Labem, the railways want to set up replacement bus services that connect to the EC trains.

Are there other restrictions?

Yes. The carriage of bicycles and prams as well as the transport of people in wheelchairs is only possible to a very limited extent.

What does Deutsche Bahn recommend?

The transport group wants to use additional service personnel. The trade and service facilities in the main station stayed open longer, it is said. The Deutsche Bahn, the Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn and the Länderbahn have incorporated all timetable changes in the electronic timetable. They can be called up at online travel information, in the travel center or at the ticket machines.

Why is the railway building just for the start of school?

“There is never a ‘good’ time to close our routes and stations for construction reasons,” says Bahn spokesman Jörg Bönisch. For this closure, the construction measures in the main station were interlinked with those in the Elbe valley so that there are extensive restrictions for travelers only on the weekend from August 25th to 27th. “Ultimately, such a closure must always be considered with regard to the nationwide effects, so that neighboring construction sites do not adversely affect each other.”
