Train Bayern’s young goalkeepers. I like it very much, says Drobný. What do you need to worry about?

Are you satisfied with your job as a goalkeeper coach in Bayern Munich’s reserves?

I have a lot of fun and am very satisfied. This has always fascinated me, I didn’t want to be in an office or do nothing. I wanted to train, to be on the pitch with the boys. And who else could I coach besides goalkeepers?

How did you come to Bayern?

It’s a long story, you have to have contacts and I made some during my time in the Bundesliga. I knew it could happen. That percentage was quite high. And it happened.

Do you have a free hand from B coach Martin Demichelis?

As for the goalkeepers, of course. He just tells me what he wants from the goalkeepers. How he wants to play, where they should be on the pitch, what system do we want to play. We talk about all this and then I work with them on everything.

Do you dedicate yourself only to the reserve or do you also help with other units? Will you get in touch with A?

I only deal with the reserve, but sometimes I go to training with A. I can go there whenever I want and be on the pitch with them. Otherwise we are connected with all the other coaches in the youth categories, with the women’s team and with team A. We go out for dinner about once a month, but we call each other every day, we share videos. I can see how they train at 7pm, 5pm. If they send me a goalkeeper, I can see what he did a day or two ago. We communicate every day, it is always better to see it on video.

You have a lot of talented young players on your team. Is your main job preparing them for the first team, or for sale to another club, or do you emphasize the results too?

It is intertwined. About eight players have passed since I arrived. They play the second German championship or the first in Holland, Belgium, Scotland, one player went to America. They don’t have an A rating yet, so they are going on loan, where they will gain experience in men’s league football.

What are your coaching ambitions?

I am mainly happy to be here and to be in an organization like Bayern. I am completely satisfied. And what comes, comes. When I was in Budějovice, I had an offer to train in Düsseldorf, which was still active in the Bundesliga at the time. I declined because I was still playing, but otherwise the offer was very good.

What is the best way to say that Bayern are a world club?

You can see it everywhere at first glance. The training facilities we have on the Campus or in Säbener Strasse are top notch. The whole service is of a high standard. If I get A, you just have to win. Bayern have only the highest ambitions and always want trophies.

There was probably significantly more pressure when Bayern didn’t have the best entry into the Bundesliga this season, right?

It can happen, there are still many games. But they have to win the championship, so that’s it. They should also dominate the cup and reach at least the Champions League semi-finals. So it is considered a successful season. Second place is not forgiven. But when you are here and you see everything, you also have responsibilities. It is up to us to raise the best players. We have to pick the right ones, work with them and then make sure they are able to play in the Bundesliga, at best for Bayern.

You could have gone to Bayern first as an active goalkeeper, then you worked at Hertha and then in Hamburg. Why hasn’t it worked even once?

When I was at Herta, there was more speculation about it. Oliver Kahn was still teasing at Bayern, then he was replaced by Michael Rensing and I think he was promised he would be number one. I didn’t want to go, I was twenty-eight at the time and didn’t want to do double work anywhere. Then I agreed on a three-year contract with Bayern, but he didn’t agree with Hamburg. And the third time was under Pep Guardiola, when I was one of two options, and the coach took over Pepe Reina. It was his decision that struck me. Everyone is entitled to it.
