At least eighty people were injured in a train accident near the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires. A passenger train crashed into a locomotive and an empty freight car.
The passenger train was traveling from Buenos Aires to the northern suburbs when it derailed on a bridge near the Palermo area at around 10:30am local time yesterday after colliding with the vehicle goods. Authorities say they are still investigating why the freight vehicle was on the way.
“There is still not enough information about the circumstances of the accident,” said the mayor of the city, Jorge Macri, when he visited the scene of the accident. He praised the rescuers for their quick action.
Cable theft
Transport Minister Franco Mogetta said that “several hypotheses are being investigated” about the cause of the accident. According to him, it cannot be ruled out that the signals were no longer working properly due to cable theft.
Dozens of people were treated on the spot. About thirty people with more injuries were taken to the hospital. At least two people were transported by helicopter.
Passengers told the media that the train had stopped on the bridge for several minutes and then collided hard with the freight vehicle. The popular train link cannot be used pending the inspection.
