On January 22, 2021, the Russian war blockbuster “1942: Eastern Front” will be released in Germany on DVD and Blu-ray. The FSK has already made a statement with its approval. Here is the German trailer:

It does not happen that often that war films are approved by the Voluntary Self-Control of the Film Industry (FSK) from the age of 18, i.e. “no youth approval”. Is also understandable: The horrors of war should not be played down – so even cruel depictions are often given an FSK 16, because they also have a certain teaching effect (just take the opening scene of “Saving Private Ryan “).
But with “1942: Eastern Front” a threshold was apparently crossed – and the FSK drew the red seal with the “FSK 18” despite the topic. The image carrier may therefore not be offered, left or otherwise made accessible to children and young people.

The plot of “1942: Eastern Front”: In 1942 the already badly decimated Russian troops are supposed to hold the village of Ovsyannikovo by all means. In the Battle of Rzhev this succeeds at first, but the announced reinforcement is a long time coming. Instead, the head of a special unit joins the soldiers – his job is to track down traitors in his own ranks. That is not exactly conducive to the already very tense mood …
Technically strong, politically questionable
The production standard of “1942: Eastern Front” is visibly much higher than one is otherwise used to from war films that appear in this country directly for home theaters. Obviously, a lot of money and effort were put into the snowy battle sequences – instead of showing many battles briefly, director Igor Kopylov decided to put all his available means into a battle, which he then also with the greatest possible effort and level of detail traced.
On the other hand, according to the voices on the film that have appeared so far, one should not expect an overly deep discussion. “1942: Eastern Front” apparently takes a tough nationalistic course, which is reflected not only in the drawing of the German Wehrmacht (that alone would be understandable), but also in dealing with their own Russian past.
