Internationally, Netflix subscribers can enjoy “Stowaway” from today. In Germany, the film with Toni Collette, Anna Kendrick and Daniel Dae Kim will hit cinemas on May 6, 2021 – should they be open.
One of the great advantages of a global player like Netflix: You can release films and series worldwide at the same time. While US productions usually take a little longer to get across the pond, the waiting times at the streaming giant are reduced to practically zero. However, this does not (always) apply to purchased content.
After “I Am Mother” with Oscar winner Hilary Swank came to the cinema in this country in 2019, after it had already been released via Netflix in the USA and other countries, a second science fiction film is now doing the same: Because too “Stowaway” will be released on April 22, 2021 in numerous countries on Netflix and in Canada on Amazon Prime Video. In this country, however, we have to be patient a little longer. The German start is May 6, 2021 – in the cinema! However, it will probably not be possible to keep this date.
In the first moment you can see a disadvantage in this – after all, we have to wait for the big space adventure – but in the end the local theatrical release also has something good: regardless of whether the cinemas will really all be open in a few weeks science fiction films like “Gravity” have repeatedly taught us in the past that space adventures are simply best on screen.
This is what “Stowaway” is all about
Halfway to Mars, the crew of a spaceship discovers that they have a stowaway on board – who soon threatens to endanger the peace of the group. Because while most crew members tend towards a violent solution to keep the uninvited guest in check, the doctor on board as the voice of reason wants to deal with the angry stranger differently. But which way is the right one? And why is the man on board at all?
The best sci-fi movies on Netflix
After director Joe Penna made his successful feature film debut in 2018 with “Arctic” (with Mads Mikkelsen, among others), he was able to assemble a prominent cast for his latest film. In addition to Shamier Anderson (“Goliath”) as a stowaway, Toni Collette (“Hereditary”), Anna Kendrick (“Pitch Perfect”) and Daniel Dae Kim (“Lost”) will also be there.
