Tragic Wedding Hall Fire in Nineveh Leaves Over 450 Dead and Injured

The Iraqi Red Crescent reported today, Wednesday, that the number of victims and injured in the wedding hall fire in the Al-Hamdaniya district in Nineveh has risen to more than 450 people, including dead and wounded.

Today, Wednesday, the Iraqi Civil Defense revealed preliminary details related to the tragic accident, saying that “the wedding hall was covered with highly flammable Ecobond panels that violate safety instructions and were referred to the judiciary according to Civil Defense Law No. 44 of 2013 due to its lack of safety requirements for alarm and firefighting systems.” .

The statement, which was reported by the Iraqi News Agency, added, “The fire led to the collapse of parts of the hall as a result of the use of highly flammable, low-cost building materials that collapse within minutes when the fire breaks out.”

He continued: “Within minutes, the civil defense teams mobilized, contained the fire, carried out direct raids, and succeeded in entering the middle of the burning hall to begin rescue operations for the families, including women and children, in conjunction with extinguishing the fire that led to the collapse of parts of the hall.”

The statement concluded by saying that preliminary information indicates “the use of fireworks during the wedding ceremony, which initially ignited a fire inside the hall. The fire spread very quickly and the matter was exacerbated by the toxic gas emissions associated with the burning of the highly flammable Ecobond plastic panels, which caused casualties and injuries among families. An investigation was opened.” And summoning a forensic expert to confirm the causes of the outbreak of the fire, in accordance with established legal procedures.”

The Minister of Health, Saleh Mahdi Al-Hasnawi, directed the alert to assist and treat those injured in the accident.

A statement by the Ministry of Health stated, “Minister of Health, Saleh Mahdi Al-Hasnawi, directed the ministry’s departments in Nineveh Governorate and its neighboring departments to be mobilized to aid and treat those injured in the fire accident in Al-Hamdaniya district and to provide them with health care.”

For his part, Interior Minister Abdul Amir Al-Shammari confirmed that civil defense teams were able to evacuate all those injured in the Hamdaniyah fire accident.

The Iraqi News Agency quoted Al-Shammari as saying that he “went to Nineveh Governorate to find out the repercussions of the wedding hall fire accident in Al-Hamdaniya,” adding that “the Civil Defense was able to evacuate all those injured in the fire accident.”

Earlier, Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani directed the Ministers of Interior and Health to mobilize all efforts to provide relief to those affected by the fire in Al-Hamdaniya District.

The Prime Minister’s Media Office stated in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency, “Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani is making a phone call to the Governor of Nineveh, to find out the repercussions of the fire that occurred in one of the wedding halls in the Al-Hamdaniya district in the Nineveh Plain, and directs the Ministers of Interior and Health to mobilize all efforts to provide relief.” Those affected by the unfortunate accident.
