Tragic Wall Collapse at Historic Tunisian City of Cairogun: Three Dead, UNESCO World Heritage Site Devastated

Tunisia: Three people died after the wall of the historic city of Cairogun in Tunisia collapsed. The town of Cairogon and its mosque are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most famous shrine in Tunisia.

The accident happened when the wall fell while rebuilding the surrounding wall of the town. A part of the wall collapsed. The accident happened on Saturday.

Officials said that three workers who were involved in the reconstruction of the wall were killed. A 30-meter long section of the six-meter-high wall collapsed. Two people were injured in the accident.

According to the authorities, the wall collapsed due to the heavy rains that fell the previous day. The historic town of Cairogon was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

The Kairouan medina is surrounded by a three kilometer long giant wall. Official spokesman Moise Tria said the wall was being reconstructed at the time of the accident.

The region received more than a millimeter of rain on Saturday. Meteorological officials have indicated that heavy rain will continue in the coming days and up to 90 mm of rain may be received in the area.

Built in 670 AD, Kairouan is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in North Africa. It is also a tourist center visited by many tourists including foreigners.

UNESCO attests that Kairouan developed in the 19th century under the Aghlabid dynasty. The main attraction is the mosque inside the compound.

The architecture of this mosque, including pillars made entirely of marble and ancient stones, is an eye-catcher. The mosque also has gates built in the 9th century.

According to the book Ifriqia – Thirteen Centuries of Art and Architecture in Tunisia, there are four gates: Bab Tunis, Bab al-Khuqa, Bab al-Jaladdin and Bab el-Shuhada. These gates evoke the richness of ancient architecture.
