Tragic! Five railroad workers died in Italia north after hit by a train while carrying out maintenance work.
The train, which was loading wagons on the Milan-Turin line, was traveling at 160 kilometers (99 miles) per hour when it hit a team of workers changing sections of the track near Brandizzo, on the outskirts of Turin, Italian news agencies reported. AGI and Ansa as reported by the news agency AFPThursday (31/8/2023).
In this unfortunate incident, the workers were reportedly dragged several meters. Two of their colleagues working nearby managed to escape, including the foreman.
Paolo Bodoni, Mayor of Brandizzo, told AGI that an emergency worker described to him a “terrible scene, with human remains 300 meters away”.
“This is a great tragedy,” he said.
“It cannot be ruled out that there may have been a miscommunication,” he said, adding that an investigation was underway.
The train engineer was shocked but not injured in the incident, Ansa reported.
RFI, the company that manages Italy’s rail network, expressed its “deep sorrow over what happened and offered its condolences to the families of the workers who died”, in a statement published by Italian media.
