On the 24th of last month, a quiet mart parking lot on the outskirts of the city.
A police officer responds to a report that someone has stolen alcohol and knocks on the window of a black car.
I repeat the request to get off, but the driver asks why with only the windshield slightly lowered.
[경찰관 : 차에서 내리세요. 내리세요. (무슨 일인데요?) 당신이 뭔가를 훔쳤다고 합니다. 가지 마세요. (저는 물건 훔치지 않았어요. 다른 여자들은….”)]
During the scuffle, the car starts to pull away as the police attempt to break the windshield.
At that moment, another police officer in front of the car opened fire right in front of the windshield.
The moving car only stopped after hitting a building wall.
The driver who was shot was Takiya Young, a 21-year-old black woman with two children and a pregnant woman.
After the incident, he was taken to the hospital, but died along with the fetus.
When the bereaved family strongly pointed out the overreaction, the police released the body cam more than a week after the incident.
It was to show that he did not respond to repeated requests for inspection and that he drove towards the police.
The lawyer for the bereaved family, who checked the video, said, “We were able to confirm that the young woman was killed,” and “I could not find any reason for immunity from police officers in the video.”
The Ohio Department of Criminal Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the police response.
The two police officers involved in the case were suspended while the investigation was ongoing.
Local media are paying attention to whether this case will turn into a controversy over black excess suppression.
