Tragic shooting leaves one dead and five injured on New York subway platform

On Monday afternoon, a dispute on a platform at the Mount Eden station of the New York Subway left one person dead and five injured.

The victim is of Hispanic origin and was identified as Obed Beltrán Sánchez, 35 years old.

It is being investigated whether it was related to the shooting or whether it was an innocent victim.

However, Carlos Nieves, NYPD spokesman, indicated that the majority of the victims were passengers.

“There was a dispute on the train, the dispute escalated and one of the individuals pulled out a gun and started shooting when the train door opened,” he said.

“The gunman’s targets were not the ones who received the wounds, at least four were innocent people who were disembarking from the train,” he added.

Nieves assured that at least one of the shots occurred inside the car.

In addition to Beltrán Sánchez, a 71-year-old man, a 28-year-old man, and a 15-year-old man were injured, while a 28-year-old woman and a 15-year-old woman were also reported with gunshot wounds.

A witness even claimed that one of the women had been shot in the mouth.

“I saw a lot of people getting down and right there I saw a girl holding her mouth,” the witness explained.

“She had a shot inside her mouth, she was holding on… a boy and I gave her first aid and we sat her down and called the paramedics,” she said.

As of this Tuesday morning, the alleged perpetrators had not been arrested.

Commissioner Kaz Daughtry issued a warning to the shooter through his social networks.

“We will catch whoever is responsible for this disgusting and senseless act of violence in our community. Now you are the most wanted by the New York Police Department and the best detectives in the world will find you,” he noted.
