A child was killed in an accident involving a school bus in the eastern German state of Saxony on Tuesday. At least ten students were slightly injured and two adults seriously injured, including the driver.
According to local media, the bus collided with a gritting or snow plow truck near Sehmatal around 6:30 am. That place is located in the Ore Mountains on the Czech border.
The bus then crashed into a tree next to the road. The impact was so hard that the front of the bus was folded around the tree trunk.
According to the local Ministry of Culture, in addition to secondary school students, the bus also contained primary school students.
A child died despite the intervention of the emergency services on site. The driver of the bus had to be freed by the fire brigade. Like the other adult on board, he was transported with serious injuries.
The police suspect that the accident was caused by slippery conditions. In Saxony, many roads are covered with ice. Traffic throughout Germany is experiencing problems due to snow and icy conditions.
