A 5-year-old girl was fatally hit by a school bus yesterday in Rockland County, New York.
The incident occurred in Spring Valley on South Madison Avenue around 11:15 a.m. Friday, when the bus driver picked up a group of students from a nearby Jewish school and dropped the girl off near her home, but apparently didn’t see her and hit her with his vehicle, according to the Police Department. The victim’s name has not been released.
No charges have been announced. A witness who preferred to remain anonymous said the driver was distraught. “I can’t even imagine what the family is going through, not even the bus driver,” he told Pix11.
In late January, an 8-year-old boy was also fatally struck by a Jewish school bus in Rockland County. Two days later, three elderly people died and another adult was injured in a violent crash between a car and a school bus in New Jersey.
In another similar case, in November a Dominican grandmother was killed by a school bus after leaving her three granddaughters in class in Queens (NYC).
The authorities remember that there is zero tolerance towards drivers who drive at excess speed and/or under the influence of alcohol and drugs..
In December Governor Kathy Hochul signed the “Angelica Law”, intended to keep drivers with prior suspensions off the road by felony charging repeat offenders who operate vehicles after committing five or more traffic violations that resulted in suspensions or revocations.
