A climber dressed in a Santa Claus suit fell from the balcony of a high-rise building in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. He was supposed to make a spectacular descent at an organized party for children, but his performance ended tragically.
The fall was caught on video by eyewitnesses. On the recording, the children can be heard rejoicing in anticipation of the generous old man with the gifts. The climber, dressed as Santa Claus, is then seen scaling the balcony railing of a 24-storey building. He hangs for a few seconds as a spotlight shines on him – just as the man falls.
Expectations for a spectacle seem so high that not everyone immediately understands that it is a tragic accident. There are even joking insinuations of “he fell” accompanied by laughter.
According to a 74.RU reader, two ambulances arrived at the scene, but the celebration continued.
“When we approached the organizers with the question: “Did this have to happen?“, they replied: “Probably“, commented a witness to the incident.
The 35-year-old climber died on the spot. The main department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Chelyabinsk region has refrained from commenting for the time being.
