Leandro De Niro Rodriguez, the 19-year-old grandson of actor Robert De Niro, died of an overdose. A “toxic mixture” of several substances, including fentanyl and cocaine, led to his death, CNN reports, citing the findings of the medical examiner.
The death of the 19-year-old was announced on July 3 on the Instagram profile by his mother Drena De Niro, who is the adoptive daughter of Robert De Niro. The next day, the 79-year-old actor released a statement regarding this tragedy. “I am deeply saddened by the passing of my beloved grandson Leo,” the star said.
On August 9, CNN released new information regarding the cause of death of the 19-year-old. According to an e-mail received from the New York office of forensic medicine, which performed the autopsy, the boy died after ingesting “a toxic mixture of fentanyl, bromazolam, alprazolam, 7-aminoclonazepam, ketamine and cocaine.” CNN also noted that investigators are treating the death of the actor’s grandson as an accident.

In early July, Leander’s mother, when asked about the cause of her son’s death, replied that “someone sold him fentanyl pills.” She added that the unidentified people “knew that (the pills) were stuffed with (it) and still sold them to him.”
Less than two weeks after Leander’s death, the media reported the arrest of a 20-year-old woman. ABC News reports that she is known as “Percocet Princess”, after one of the painkillers. According to the report of the portal, she was detained in connection with illegal drug trafficking, she has already heard allegations. CNN, in turn, emphasizes that she is not a suspect in the murder.

Fentanyl – what is it?
Sold illegally, fentanyl is usually available in tablets, similar to those available in pharmacies with a prescription. The agent is smuggled into the US mainly from Mexico. In its production, active substances imported from China are used on a large scale.
In the US in 2022, over 100,000 Americans died from an overdose. As many as two-thirds of these tragedies are related to fentanyl overdose. In addition to this substance, the Drug Enforcement Agency seized 59,000 kilograms of methamphetamine, approximately 2,000 kilograms of heroin and approximately 200,000 kilograms of cocaine last year.
