A law enforcement official told CNN that the incident began when Eric Duprey attempted to sell narcotics to a group of Bronx plainclothes police officers on an anti-narcotics operation in the neighborhood.
The police then attempted to arrest the suspect at the scene, but he fled on a motorcycle brought by an accomplice. As he was walking on a sidewalk towards other plainclothes police officers, one of them grabbed a picnic cooler and threw it in his face. A shock of rare violence that caused the suspect to fall from his motorcycle against a tree, after which he hit a car and the sidewalk.

Éric Duprey was pronounced dead by doctors at the scene of the accident, according to the New York Attorney General’s Office press release, which has opened an investigation into the incident. “On the evening of August 23, near 2505 Aqueduct Avenue, a NYPD officer threw a picnic cooler at Mr. Duprey, who was riding a motorcycle. The cooler struck Mr. Duprey and knocked him to the ground. Mr. Duprey was pronounced dead at the scene,” the statement said.

On Friday, authorities said the incident is being classified as a homicide by the medical examiner, who said the father-of-three’s fatal injuries were caused by the accident.
A police officer for 13 years, Erik Duran has been rewarded dozens of times by the police for his work. However, a complaint was filed against him last year for abuse of authority during a police stop, according to the city’s Civil Complaints Review Committee consulted by the New York Post.
