The police received a report of a stabbing at 04.52, on the night of New Year’s Day.
All emergency services responded to a private address in a residential area on Straumen, which is described as small and quiet.

About half an hour later, the first patrol arrived at an address in Sørfold municipality in Nordland. The municipality has around 1,900 inhabitants and is located north of Fauske.

The patrol then immediately entered the house.

There they found three dead and one injured person.

The priest: – Everyone knows everyone here

The Town Hall in Sørfold was opened as a relatives’ center during the first New Year’s Day.

– We are a small municipality where everyone knows everyone. Everyone is very strongly affected by what has happened, says parish priest Lisbeth Gieselmann to Aftenposten.

She is present in the town hall hall at Straumen. She has met many people there during the day.

– There have been families and friends who have come here. Being together is important now. Anyone who wants to can come here, says the parish priest.

Familial relationship

The dead are a man and a woman in their 40s and a young man in his late teens. There must have been two other children in the apartment.

– One of the children is injured, says police attorney Kristine Pedersen.

The injured child was flown to Nordlandssykehuset by helicopter.

– There was another child present. We can assume that there was a familial relationship between them, says Pedersen.

The last child is not physically injured. The police will not yet disclose the children’s ages.

Police prosecutor Kristine Pedersen tells Avisa Nordland that the uninjured child has been questioned.

The suspected perpetrator is among the dead.
The police say there were several people present in the house earlier in the evening during a New Year’s celebration, but the police will not say how many. They say there is no reason to believe that other suspects have been involved.

The mayor of Sørfold: – Deeply tragic

Mayor Kolbjørn Mathisen (Ap) in Sørfold municipality states at a press conference that the municipality set up emergency staff at 10 am.

Setting up a crisis staff in a municipality means that a group of people provides help and advice or makes decisions during a crisis.

– This is a deeply tragic case that has affected us. Now our task is to take care of the population in Sørfold. Our thoughts go first and foremost to all relatives and those affected, he says.

The mayor and the municipality have asked for help from neighboring municipalities.

– We have deployed crisis teams, he says.

It includes a municipal psychologist, municipal chief medical officer, psychiatric nurse and public health nurses.

– We have received assistance from our neighboring municipalities and the Red Cross. We will adjust our efforts according to what is appropriate, says a very impressed mayor.

– What feedback have you received?

– That we must stand together. We must support each other.

Straumen school will be opened on Tuesday for students who wish to gather at the school. Together with the school’s staff, representatives from the Red Cross and health nurses are also present.
