Tragic New Year’s Day Fire Claims Life of 6-Year-Old Girl on Staten Island

A 6-year-old girl died when her home caught fire in Staten Island (NYC) yesterday, New Year’s Day.

The fire broke out in a two-story home on Brookside Avenue in the West Brighton neighborhood, which was still under construction. Christmas decoration. The girl was rescued alive, but was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Richmond University Medical Center, reported SILive.com.

The fire was reported to the FDNY at 5:38 pm on Monday, January 1. Twelve FDNY units responded to the home with 60 firefighters and EMS personnel. The flames were brought under control almost an hour later.

No more victims were reported. A neighbor said that seven people – three adults and four children – lived in that house. The fire started on the 2nd floor, in a bedroom, said Division 8 Deputy Chief Gregg Hansson. The cause is under investigation.

This is the second recent tragedy for this family, as the girl’s parents had recently moved there, the grandfather’s house, to help care for him because the grandmother died just before Thanksgiving in November, according to ABC News. Their names have not been released.

Neighbor Paul Michielli told CBS News who saw the fire from his house and ran there. “It really happened very quickly. When I got to the end of the block, I saw very dark smoke coming out of one of the windows, and the firefighters were already breaking the windows and trying to get into the place.”
