Tragic Midair Collision Claims Three Lives During Firefighting Operation in Riverside County
CABAZON, Calif. (KABC) – In a devastating incident on Sunday, two firefighting helicopters collided in midair while battling a brush fire in Riverside County, resulting in the loss of three lives.
The collision occurred during the firefighting efforts against the Broadway Fire near Cabazon. The blaze initially started as a building fire, which quickly spread to nearby brush and engulfed several acres before firefighters managed to gain control over it.
One of the helicopters crashed into a hillside, claiming the lives of the pilot and two crew members on board. The second aircraft made a hard landing, fortunately resulting in no serious injuries.
David Fulcher, the southern region chief for Cal Fire, expressed his deepest sympathies and sorrow to the families and coworkers of the personnel involved. He described the incident as a tragic loss for the fire service community, as well as for Cal Fire and the Riverside County Fire Department.
The crash was reported in the vicinity of Pipeline Road and Apache Trail, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.
The three crew members who lost their lives were identified as a contract pilot, a Cal Fire division chief, and a Cal Fire captain. The helicopter involved in the collision was operating on a contract basis for firefighting agencies.
Richard Cordova, spokesman for Cal Fire Riverside, revealed that the helicopter was a CWN (call-when-needed) helicopter. These helicopters are utilized to assist in larger incidents throughout the state and to enhance the air program.
The Broadway Fire, which had spread to at least three acres, was reported in the area of Broadway and Esperanza avenues.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are currently investigating the cause of the crash.
