A one-year-old infant died due to exposure to opioids at a daycare center in the Bronx, New York. Three other children were also taken to the hospital with similar symptoms and are receiving treatment.

According to a report by the New York Times (NYT) on the 16th (local time), New York City police are investigating a person suspected of a crime in connection with the death of an infant at a Bronx daycare center.

In particular, the investigation is focused on the connection between infant deaths and the discovery of packaging devices commonly used by drug dealers during a search and seizure inside a daycare center.

Paramedics responded to the scene at 2:45 p.m. the previous day after receiving a 911 report that three infants at the daycare center had lost consciousness.

At the time of arrival, the 1-year-old boy, 2-year-old boy, and 8-month-old girl were all unconscious. Depending on the symptoms, the crew administered Narcan (ingredient name: naloxone), an opiate antidote, and immediately transferred them to a nearby hospital.

We additionally learned that the parents of a 2-year-old boy who returned home from daycare around noon on the same day noticed that his son was lethargic and unresponsive and took him to the hospital.

Among the children taken to the hospital, a 1-year-old boy was confirmed to have lost consciousness and died at the hospital. The other three people regained consciousness, but some were reported to be in critical condition.

Recently, in the United States, deaths due to overdose of opiate drugs such as fentanyl have increased rapidly, becoming a serious social problem. Fentanyl, a synthetic opiate drug, has a lethal dose of only 2 mg, so even a small overdose can cause death.
