At least seven children have been killed by a roadside bomb in southwestern Syria, Syrian state media report. Two people were also injured. This happened in the province of Daraa, between Jordan and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
It is unclear who planted the bomb. Syrian state news agency SANA quotes a police source pointing to militant groups still active in the region.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which operates from London, says that a pro-government militia is behind it. The Observatory also assumes that at least eight children were killed and one person was injured.
Start of the uprising
Daraa is the place where the 2011 uprising against President Assad began. This eventually led to a war that is still going on and has cost the lives of at least half a million people. In 2018, Daraa was retaken by forces of Assad and his allies.
After that, things remained restless in the region. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the detonated roadside bomb is the 83rd incident of violence in Daraa this year. At least a hundred people died.
