A sunny day at the beach turned into a nightmare in the English seaside resort of Bournemouth on Wednesday.
The emergency services went to the popular local beach and retrieved ten people from the water after an incident. Among them a 12-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy who were taken to hospital and later pronounced dead.
It is not yet clear how the boy and girl received the critical injuries.
The other eight were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, writes The Guardian.
Police in Dorset have opened an investigation into the incident and arrested a man on suspicion of manslaughter. The man must have been on the water when the incident happened.
Heading towards a dismal record: Measures shelved
In a statement, Detective Superintendent Neil Corrigan said there were many people on the beach at the time and asked anyone with information to come forward.
– We are at an early stage of the investigation and ask people not to speculate about the circumstances surrounding the incident, says Corrigan according to BBC.
Bournemouth MP Conor Burns sends his condolences to the relatives.
– My thoughts are with everyone connected with the terrible events that unfolded in Bournemouth tonight. A thought-provoking lesson that our beaches and seas can bring a lot of joy, but that the danger of something dangerous happening is always present. Thanks to the lifeguards and the air ambulance, says Burns according to The Guardian.
