Tragic Hit-and-Run Incident Claims Life of Hispanic Woman in The Bronx

NEW YORK — A Hispanic woman was fatally struck by a vehicle in the Bronx that left the scene after the incident on Friday, according to the New York City Police Department.

The victim, identified as Martina Sánchez Alcántara, 75, was crossing the street near the intersection of East 163rd Street and Grand Concourse at 5:03 a.m. when she was hit by a car. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, where officers also found car parts following the collision.

Neighbors of the victim arrived at the building where he lived with flowers and in tears after learning of the fatal incident.

“Too good a person,” said Katy, the victim’s neighbor. “The whole building is mourning her, she had a big heart.”

At the scene, authorities found a pair of tennis shoes and what appears to be a woman’s purse. They claim that the 75-year-old woman, a Dominican grandmother, was on her way to work.

Police are now searching for the driver of a Volkswagen sedan as family and friends sent a strong message to the hit-and-run driver.

“Let him turn himself in and show his face for what he did,” said Fernando Rodríguez, a relative of the victim.
