The life of a 14-year-old teenager ended unexpectedly on Friday afternoon. While he was riding his bike in the Middlesex County town of South River, he was struck by a pickup truck driven by a man who later decided to run away.
As reported by the New York Police, the incident occurred at 4:20 pm, at the intersection of Whitehead Avenue and Russell Avenue.
Michael Arena, 63, was arrested and is charged in connection with the fatal hit-and-run.
A surveillance camera captured the moment the teenager was run over
Through a surveillance video, which was later broadcast to local media, the scene and the moment in which the minor is riding the bicycle and the white van approaches without contemplation is appreciated.
The camera belongs to a neighbor from that same street, who said that the images left him breathless.
“Every strand of my hair stood on end on my arms,” she told the media. He also assured that the victim was alive when the person responsible for the hit-and-run decided to step on the accelerator and leave.
The teen was taken to a hospital minutes after first responders arrived. Despite the fact that he was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation and assistance with vital signs arrived at the center, he died shortly after.
Michael Arena remains in custody at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center. He is expected to be processed in the next few hours from the High Court.
