Tragic Harlem Shooting: Grandfather Fatally Shot for Kindness; Suspect Arrested

Tyrone Swinton, a 60-year-old grandfather, was fatally shot because of his kindness in opening the doors of his home in Harlem (NYC) to a young man in trouble, according to his family.

Police found Swinton unconscious and suffering from eight gunshot wounds on the morning of February 29. He was rushed to Mount Sinai Morningside, where he was pronounced dead. Days after NYPD arrested 25-year-old Joseph Fulfordand accused him of homicide and criminal possession of a weapon.

Swinton He had three adult children and three grandchildren. A relative said the victim had taken in the needy young man several years ago and then kicked him out of his home. But the friendship resurfaced a few months ago. “The night before he came to my brother’s house,” Yvette Swinton said disconsolately to Daily News.

“My brother gave him a coat. He only stayed at my brother’s house for 10 or 15 minutes at most. He told him he had a girl waiting downstairs. My brother gave her money and told her that she would return the next day. And this is what happened. Now my brother is not here.”

Neighbors of the building located on W. 116th St. near Malcolm X Blvd. heard arguments and shooting around 9:30 am on the day of the crime. Officers were called to the building around 11:10 a.m.

Building superintendent Hal Walker said Community Access, a nonprofit organization, placed Swinton in that building. The organization helps people who are homeless, have disabilities or are veterans find housing, according to its website.

All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
