Two elderly women were killed and at least seven people were injured in a fire at a senior housing complex in Plainview, Long Island, NY. early Sunday morning.
The fatalities were identified as Lynne Citron (74) y Theresa Casale (84). The oldest of them died at the scene and the other died after being taken to the hospital in critical condition, he explained. ABC News.
Crews responded to a fire that broke out at the Harmon Shepherd Hill apartment complex on Central Park Road around 5 a.m. Sunday. The Oyster Bay Housing Authority owns that senior housing complex.
All residents were evacuated from the building and several were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. Nassau County firefighters are investigating the cause of the flames, limited Fox News. Police said two people were sent to a nearby hospital for further treatment and are in stable condition.
“When we arrived, there was an intense fire on the 2nd floor that had already vented through the windows and then quickly traveled to the rest of the apartment and then spread to the roof, collapsing,” said Plainview Volunteer Fire Chief, Andy Cohen.
Residents say the building recently received a “passed” inspection notice. Now displaced survivors are searching for answers.
“We mourn the lives of those who died and pray for those injured and displaced by the fire. What happened on Sunday is unimaginable and our hearts break for the families affected by this tragedy. The city will continue to assist the Housing Authority with necessary resources to help those who lost their homes,” Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino said in a statement.
Last week, a man died in a fire that destroyed an apartment in The Bronx (NYC) and left a woman seriously injured and several people homeless, at dawn Thursday.
Also this month, a 67-year-old man was killed and three other people were injured, including a baby, in a public housing (NYCHA) apartment fire in Brooklyn.
