Shortly after 1 p.m., county police said they found the remains of a man at the scene. His name and age were not specified, but neighbors said that He had lived there for decades. There were no other reports of others affected.
“Now you’re climbing on parts of a ceiling instead of just walking down a hallway,” he described to News 12 Melville Fire Chief Donald Barclay. “The fire could have grown and spread throughout most of the house. because of that extra oxygen and then it makes it a danger for our guys crawling around inside trying to get to where the fire is.”
There is no official word yet on the cause of the fire, but officials said an initial investigation revealed it does not appear to have been criminal in nature.
