Tragic Fire in Deux-Sèvres: 350 Goats Perish in Agricultural Building Blaze

A 1,300 m² agricultural building housing 500 goats burned down in Deux-Sèvres. Despite the intervention of firefighters who managed to control the fire, 350 goats perished in the fire.

At the end of the morning, this August 23, 2023, a fire broke out in Germond-Rouvre, north of Niort, in Deux-Sèvres. The fire notably affected an agricultural building of 1,300 m2 of fodder and around 500 goats. The firefighters intervened to prevent the spread of the fire to the surrounding barns and save some animals, 350 goats perished in the flames.

In the afternoon, the 37 firefighters dispatched to the scene since the morning managed to completely control the fire. The building where the fire broke out was completely set on fire, taking with it 350 goats.

We were able to prevent the spread to a 600 m² building which also housed animals [120 moutons et 80 chèvres, NDLR]“, explains Lieutenant Wilfried Sicot of Sdis 79, who explains that he does not know the circumstances of the start of the fire. In order to avoid a resumption of fire, a team of firefighters remains present on the spot until the night.

For his part, the breeder, Quentin Vrignault, is very touched. “I was doing maintenance operations and cit took a hit, I couldn’t do anythinghe says. I opened the gate and took out 180 goats and there are 350 goats left.“Still in shock, the man is very moved.”It’s been 10 years since I’ve been there, I bought 90 chevrette to start with and there I had 550. I don’t know how I’m going to do it. I don’t even know how I’ll shelter the remaining beasts“If for the moment the breeder is struggling to project himself, he indicates that he does not”won’t let go“.
