A fire broke out in a detached house in Namwon, Jeollabuk-do, killing an elderly couple with limited mobility.
The police believe that the cause of the fire was that the couple used two heating mats on top of each other instead of a boiler to save on heating costs.

A fire broke out in a one-story detached house in Sandong-myeon, Namwon-si, Jeollabuk-do around 5:50 a.m. this morning.

″Because the fire starts here. The lights are bright in our yard. I came out and went back in. “I can’t come out because I’m scared.”
A man in his 80s and a woman in her 60s, a couple, died in the fire.
The couple has been living inside the house due to mobility issues, and has been using an electric mat instead of a boiler to save on heating costs.
A portable gas burner and two burnt heating mats were found in the master bedroom.
At the site, an electric blanket was laid over a heated mat.
Police and fire authorities believe that the fire started when heating mats were used instead of a boiler.

″If you lay an electric blanket on top of a hot water mat, and the heat from the hot water mat, the heat flowing through the electric blanket, and the blanket combine, the heat accumulates, greatly increasing the probability of a fire.″
Neighbors cannot hide their sadness.

″I lived a difficult life. He was a very strong person when he was young. He passed away. I feel bad for him as a person in the village.″
The police requested an autopsy from the National Institute of Forensic Science to confirm the cause of death of the deceased couple.
