Tragic Drowning Accident Claims the Life of 18-Year-Old Boy in Hamar
On Thursday afternoon, a devastating drowning accident occurred at Koigen in Hamar, resulting in the death of an 18-year-old boy. Concerned relatives reported him missing around 6.30pm when they had not been able to contact him since 4pm.
The police immediately initiated a search operation both by water and on land, focusing their efforts in the area between the jetty in Hamar and the diving tower. As the search intensified, assistance was requested from the fire service and the rescue company. It was these dedicated crews who eventually discovered the boy’s body at 8.30pm.
The search proved to be demanding due to the challenging conditions. Amund Glæserud, the leader of the rescue divers, revealed that their boat reached speeds of around 50 knots over Mjøsa, completing the journey in just 18 minutes. Glæserud explained that this was the fastest way to reach the scene, significantly quicker than taking a car over the Mjøsbrua.
With guidance from the police and rescue teams on the beach, the divers were directed to the relevant search area. However, the muddy bottom of the water hindered their visibility, with only three to four meters of clear sight. Glæserud, who was one of the two divers in the water, described the challenging conditions and the search process. After approximately fifteen minutes of searching, his colleague discovered the boy lying on the ground about 15 to 20 meters from the shore. The dive leader estimated that they found the person at a depth of around 3.5 meters.
The victim has been identified as Claude Ndoli, an 18-year-old resident of Stange. Relatives have been informed about the release of his name. Stange municipality confirmed that Ndoli lived there. The tragic incident has deeply affected the community, especially the immediate family of the young boy. Mayor Bjarne Christiansen expressed his condolences and assured that the family is receiving support from the refugee service and the crisis team.
In light of this tragic event, Hamar mayor Einar Busterud has been asked about considering safety measures, such as lifeguards, along Mjøsa. However, Busterud emphasized the importance of understanding the circumstances before implementing any measures, stating that lessons can only be learned once the course of events is fully known.
The drowning accident has left the community in shock, and the loss of a young life has prompted discussions about the need for increased safety measures in the area. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting the grieving family and preventing such tragedies in the future.

“It was a race against time,” Glæserud said. “We knew that every minute counted in trying to find the boy alive.”
The tragic accident occurred when the boy, whose identity has not been released, was swimming with friends at Koigen. Witnesses reported that he suddenly disappeared underwater, and despite their attempts to search for him, they were unable to locate him.
“It was a horrifying experience,” said one witness who was at the scene. “We were just swimming and having fun when we realized he was nowhere to be found. We searched for him desperately, but it was like he vanished.”
The incident has left the community of Hamar devastated and shocked. The mayor expressed his condolences to the boy’s family and vowed to support them in any way possible.
“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the young boy,” the mayor said. “This is an unimaginable tragedy, and we will do everything we can to support them during this difficult time.”
The police are currently investigating the incident to determine the cause of the drowning. Initial reports suggest that it may have been due to a medical episode, but nothing has been confirmed. The boy’s body will undergo an autopsy to provide more information.
In the meantime, authorities are urging the public to exercise caution while swimming and to be aware of the potential risks. They are reminding people to swim in designated areas, always swim with a buddy, and never swim alone.
“This tragic incident serves as a reminder of how dangerous water can be,” said a spokesperson for the local authorities. “We urge everyone to be mindful of their own safety and to take the necessary precautions while enjoying water activities.”
The community of Hamar is coming together to mourn the loss of the young boy. Vigils and memorials are being planned to honor his memory and support his family.
“Our thoughts are with the boy’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” the spokesperson added. “We hope that the community can find solace in coming together to remember him and offer support to his family.”
