Massachusetts Man Dies by Suicide on Family Vacation in Hilton Head
Stanley Kotowski, a 60-year-old father from Massachusetts, was found dead on August 26, during a family trip to Hilton Head Island. According to officials, Kotowski died by suicide after going missing on August 16 amidst a mental health crisis.
Tragic Discovery and Cause of Death
Beaufort County Coroner David Ott confirmed that Kotowski’s body was discovered hanging beneath a house near where he had been staying. The coroner revealed that an apparatus was involved in the method of asphyxiation, although specifics were not disclosed. “We estimate the day of death is the day he went missing,” Ott noted at a press conference.
Behavior and Concerns Prior to Disappearance
It was reported that Kotowski had been experiencing increased levels of paranoia and insomnia in the days leading up to his disappearance. His wife, Jackie, indicated that he had sought medical assistance prior to and during the vacation. A distressed Kotowski felt he was being pursued by authorities and was anxious about the ocean, fearing jellyfish and sharks.
Challenging Search Efforts
The search for Kotowski took more than 11 days, involving canines, drones, and door-to-door canvassing. Law enforcement officials admitted that the body went undiscovered for so long due to its concealed location; a crawl space that Kotowski found near an outdoor shower of a neighboring villa became a critical factor. Sheriff P.J. Tanner commented on the complexity of locating Kotowski: “Once I had an opportunity to review where the body was recovered, I completely understand why he was not found [sooner], until there was some evidence that led us in that direction.”
Last Known Movement
Security footage from the day he disappeared captures Kotowski stepping outside the rental barefoot, displaying signs of confusion as he wandered into the street before ultimately leaving the view of the camera.
