Tragic Discovery: Body of Missing Teen Found in East River

NEW YORK — A week after he disappeared, the body of 13-year-old Kavion Brown was found and recovered in the East River, according to law enforcement sources.

The teenager had last been seen alive in East River Park in Manhattan during the afternoon of October 20, while attending his school’s football game with friends. Brown and his friends spoke with a coach who was also attending the game. Investigators said witnesses saw Brown go into the water, but it is unclear why he did so. He never made it out.

A body was found in the river shortly after 2 pm on Friday near East 10th Street, but police later lost sight of it. He was later seen in the water near the Wall Street helipad nearly two hours later.

Brown’s body was recovered shortly after and taken to Pier 16 at South Street Seaport, police sources told NBC New York. The teenager’s mother confirmed that it was her son. The cause of death was not immediately clear.

The NYPD’s Harbor Unit had been scouring the river for days searching for Brown, as department divers continued their underwater search and drones scanned from above. But the search lasted days without any concrete evidence before the teenager’s body was found.

The discovery came just days after Brown’s parents made desperate pleas for help, seeking answers to what happened to their son.

“To anyone who’s been here, to any of the kids who are afraid to come forward: please come forward, tell us something so we’re not here wondering,” said Laquana Godfrey, Brown’s mother.
