Tragic Deaths of Dutch Mountaineers in Switzerland and Corsica: A Rock Avalanche and a Mysterious Case

Two Dutch mountaineers have died in Switzerland and Corsica. A Dutch woman was also injured in the accident in Switzerland, the authorities report.

According to the Swiss police the Dutch were part of a group of climbers on their way to the Aiguilles du Tour, a summit of 3540 meters on the border of Switzerland and France in the Mont Blanc massif. Shortly before the summit, the lead climbers were hit by a rock avalanche. A 36-year-old Dutch man did not survive. The 22-year-old woman was injured.

A second group, a few meters below, was also hit by the stones. In that group, a 26-year-old French climber died.

Corsica

A 41-year-old man from Hengelo (Overijssel) has died on the French island of Corsica. He was reported missing on Sunday evening after failing to return from a mountain hike. His body was found near Corte. Nothing is yet known about the cause of death.
