Tragic Death of Weightlifter in Wales: Man Dies After Barbell Accident

Jakarta

A weightlifter (61) died after doing a bench press with a 60 kg barbell. The man named Carl Hughes was found trapped under a 60 kg barbell after exercising at his home, in Wales, UK.

The barbell reportedly fell on his neck, causing him to choke and suffocate. Hughes was known to be exercising alone in bed and no one was watching him.

Hughes’ body was discovered by his neighbor, Gill Embleton, after she went to check on him at Hughes’ home. The neighbor was worried because Hughes was unusual in not picking up the morning paper from his apartment complex.

It turned out that after checking, Hughes was lying in his bedroom with a barbell around his neck.

Pathologist Dr Zain Mehdi said the temporary cause of death was asphyxia due to compression of the trunk on the neck. The samples have been sent for toxicology tests to check whether the bodybuilder had any substances in his body.

“‘I was away on holiday when it happened. I heard he had been found at home,” said Albert Kirk, Hughes’ neighbor in Carl’s apartment block in Rhos-on-Sea, North Wales, who was shocked to hear of his death.

“I only knew he could be greeted when I saw him leaving his apartment or coming back in. He kept to himself,” he added.
