Violeta Mitul played 41 games for Moldova’s national team, but was on a daily basis in the Icelandic club Einherji.
– It is with deep sadness in our hearts that we announce the sudden death of our player, teammate and friend, Violeta Mitul, who died in an accident on the night of September 4, aged just 26, writes the club, adding that the community in Vopnafjörður feels a sadness.
The Icelandic newspaper Everywhere writes that Mitul has fallen off a cliff at the marina in Vopnafjördur, according to police reports.

The club further writes that Mitul has a key role for the club in this year’s series. They also praise her personality.
– Violeta was kind-hearted, energetic and smiling. She was a strong team player and an exemplary soccer player. Her death is a great shock to us all and the miss she leaves behind is great, writes the club, which sends its condolences to the family.
– In such a tragic time, no words or actions can heal the wounds, but we will do what we can to comfort family and friends who are grieving, says the club.
A splicing campaign has also been created for Mitul’s family in Moldova.
