The United Kingdom is shocked by the tragic loss of Emily Chesterton, a talented 30-year-old actress, whose life was ended due to a blood clot that was not detected in time by doctors. Her case has called into question the quality of medical care in the country.
Chesterton twice went to medical professionals with concerning symptoms, including difficulty breathing, leg pain and swelling. However, on both occasions, his symptoms were overlooked and he was only prescribed medications that did not address his true problem.
On her first visit, on October 31, 2022, she was seen by an associate doctor, who prescribed paracetamol for what he considered a minor problem with her left calf. A week later, another medical assistant misdiagnosed her condition as a calf sprain, anxiety and long Covid.
His condition showed no improvement; On the contrary, she worsened noticeably, showing swelling in one of her legs, an increase in temperature in the same limb, and experiencing difficulty walking.
Despite the symptoms, he was only prescribed a beta blocker called propranolol, which is recommended to treat heart problems, migraines and anxiety.
Emily’s symptoms worsened and she sadly passed away hours after being rushed to hospital. The cause of her death was a blood clot in her left leg that caused a pulmonary embolism.
According to the forensic report, the young actress could have survived if she had been immediately referred to the emergency unit of a hospital, instead of receiving medications that did not directly address her condition, after two fruitless medical consultations.
Given this, Emily’s parents expressed concern about the lack of clarity regarding the qualifications of the medical professionals who treated her and questioned a new government plan to employ more personal assistants in the UK’s National Health Service.
Emily’s mother stressed the importance of patients knowing who is treating them and having the option of seeing a fully qualified doctor.
“All patients should have the right to know who is treating them and have the option to see a fully qualified doctor… I would have taken her straight to A&E. That is the biggest regret of my life,” Marion, the mother of the English actress, told the BBC.
