The Spanish rider was repatriated three days ago but his condition proved incompatible with surgery
The fight lasted a week Spanish motorcyclist Carles Falcón, victim of a fall during the second stage of the rally taking place in Saudi Arabia and which has just entered its last week of competition. Falcon he ended up on the ground just fifteen kilometers from the end of a special stage of almost four hundred and fifty kilometres, a timed section of the stage between the towns of Al Henakiyah and Al Duwadimi. Once stabilized, the forty-five-year-old pilot originally from the Catalan city of Tarragona was flown to hospital in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, where he is remained in intensive care and in an induced coma until he was repatriated to Spain three days ago, when now his condition had gone from serious to critical. With the passing of Falcón, there are now around eighty victims of the “Dakar” in the forty-five years of history of the adventure rally which left North Africa in 2009 to move to Latin America and then again – five years ago – to the Arabian Peninsula. The list includes drivers competing with cars, motorbikes and trucks, accompanying staff, media and even the local population. Is exactly uncertainty about the exact number of victims among the inhabitants of the places crossed by the race to suggest an approximation (by default) in the exact number of fatalities related to the race.
It had been worrying from the beginning cerebral edema, which made it impossible to perform urgent surgery on the C2 vertebra. Falcón had also procured it fractures of five ribs, clavicle and left wrist and was transferred to Spain on a medical plane to carry out new tests, with the aim of saving his life. However, the neurological damage caused by the cardiorespiratory arrest at the time of the accident had proven irreversible.
“This Monday, January 15, Carles left us. He was a smiling person, always active, who passionately loved everything he did, especially motorcycles. He left us doing what was his dream: racing the Dakar. I was having fun, I was happy on the bike. We must remember him for his smile and for the happiness he generated in everyone.” This is the text of the press release with which the TwinTrail Racing Team announced the end of hopes for Carles who for the second year (after 2022) took part in the race in the “Original by Motul” category.
Carles Falcón had practiced enduro at an amateur level and, after a long break, he had become passionate about off-roading, meeting Isaac Feliu, who founded the company in 2015 TwinTrail. His friendship with Isaac had led him to leave his job as a software engineer to join the new adventure, as a cycle route guide and off-road instructor. Carles and Isaac’s idea to debut with their team at the Dakar in the Original by Motul category, without assistance was born in 2021. A year later Carles, Isaac and Albert Martín made their debut in the Dakar with the TwinTrail Racing team. The 2022 Dakar was going well, until in the ninth stage Feliu fell heavily. Falcón had to complete the stage in uncertainty about the conditions of his friend but also continued in the following days, until reaching the final finish line in sixty-eighth position overall and sixteenth in the category.
