The Argentine actress and model Silvina Luna, who had been hospitalized for more than two months at the Italian hospital in Buenos Aires, died at the age of 43 from serious complications following an aesthetic operation. The news, confirmed by her lawyer, Fernando Burlando, gained ample space in the online press and on television channels, fueling the controversy surrounding some plastic surgery operations. The former participant of “Big Brother”, former girlfriend of the former Argentine footballer naturalized Italian Daniel Osvaldo, suffered from kidney failure following a procedure carried out in 2011 by the doctor An¡bal Lotocki, in the meantime banned from practicing his profession .
The doctor, known as “the surgeon of the famous”, injected methacrylate, a substance not authorized by the Argentine drug agency (Anmat). Sentenced in February 2022 to 4 years in prison and 5 years of disqualification from the medical profession, Lotocki has appealed and is still on the loose despite a dozen women accusing him: he claims that the material used was authorized by the Health Agency . Luna, who was on dialysis three times a week, was on the waiting list for a kidney transplant, but she wasn’t yet eligible to receive it due to her delicate health. She had been hospitalized since June. A failure of her organs killed her. The Argentine Association of Actors released a note in which it expressed “deep sadness” for the incident, underlining the 25-year career of the actress, model and presenter.
Originally from the Argentine province, Silvina had landed in Buenos Aires very young, to participate in the 2001 edition of Big Brother. From that experience, strong in extraordinary beauty and great determination – she had studied acting – she had participated in various theatrical performances, but also in fashion shows and commercials, building a respectable career. In 2010 she had asked for a “touch-up” to Lotocki’s buttocks: a small operation that the former surgeon assured her was harmless, and which instead led to her death in a few years. Three years after Silvina’s surgery she began to feel bad: she felt exhausted and without strength. Her tests diagnosed kidney failure, which she treated in recent years with massive doses of cortisone, which completely transformed her body. Since 2014 she had started sending messages to girls, telling her experience about her: «When you are young you try to chase after the stereotyped ideals of beauty, even more if you are part of the entertainment world. They have put toxic substances in my body which are slowly consuming me. I have to fight to get better, but I want to warn other women ». Her complaint prompted other women from the world of fashion and entertainment to report, such as Gabriella Trenchi, Stefani Xipolitakis, Pamela Sosa. But now that Luna is dead, justice has ordered an autopsy and Lotocki is likely to be charged with manslaughter.
