The US Cycling Federation announced the death of 17-year-old junior team rider Magnus White after he was hit by a car while training in his hometown of Boulder, Colorado, according to Reuters.
White has been concentrating on his final preparations before traveling to Glasgow, Scotland, to compete in the World Junior Cross Country Mountain Bike Championships on August 10.
“He was a rising star in cycling and his passion was evident through the races and through his friendships with his teammates and community,” the USF said in a statement, Sunday. “We will race for Magnus.”
CBS News reported that White was a rising star on various levels, and began participating in off-road cycling and mountain biking this season.
According to the site, White won a junior national cyclocross championship in 2021 and earned a spot on the US National Team. He competed with the team in Europe prior to the cyclocross world championships last year, and was chosen to represent the United States again in cyclocross this year in the Netherlands.
