The Public Prosecution in Egypt decided to imprison the defendants in the death of Naira Al-Zoghbi, a student at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Al-Arish University, which occupied public opinion in recent days.
The Public Prosecution said in a statement on its official Facebook page: “The Public Prosecution has completed investigations into the death of the student enrolled in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Al-Arish University, and it has emerged from the investigations, which included questioning witnesses to the incident and investigations by the security authorities, that the deceased was subjected to psychological pressure resulting from the actions of one of her colleagues (the first accused) By threatening to publish correspondence that she surreptitiously transferred from the deceased’s phone to her phone and sent to her colleague (the second accused), who in turn blogged on the group that includes all students from the university’s batch on the WhatsApp application that one of the students (without mentioning her specifically) had correspondence and pictures of her own, threatening her. By publishing it at the time chosen by the students (sunset), this was accompanied by his request that she apologize for the offense she had done to the first accused.”
The statement added: “The Public Prosecution charged the two defendants with threatening in writing to disclose matters related to private life accompanied by a request (a felony) and assaulting the sanctity of the victim’s private life (a misdemeanor), and ordered their provisional detention pending investigations and the seizure of their and the victim’s cell phones to complete the procedures related to them.” .
He continued: “The Public Prosecution’s investigation team in Al-Arish followed the expected itinerary of the deceased once she left the university city campus until they reached a store selling agricultural pesticides, the owner of which admitted to members of the prosecution and investigations that the victim had come in a taxi to request to buy grains and after he informed her that they were not available.” She left and the Public Prosecution verified the veracity of that story by watching the recordings of the store’s surveillance cameras, and through those recordings it was also able to determine the number of the taxi in which the deceased was traveling.”
The statement indicated that, “When her driver was questioned during the investigations, he admitted that he had accompanied the deceased, who told him that she was a student at the College of Veterinary Medicine and wanted to buy grains because she needed those grains for study purposes.” He added that he accompanied her to another store, which turned out to be closed, but they met with its owner, who informed them of the presence of the grains. The aforementioned person was in his private residence, so they went there with him, and upon summoning the latter, he admitted to the investigations that he had sold three grains of grain to the deceased for the amount of fifty-five pounds, and the investigations are being completed and the forensic authority’s report is being urgently received to determine the specific cause of death.”
The statement concluded by saying: “The Public Prosecution notes that the sanctity of private life is protected in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and the law, and that it will firmly confront any incidents that include a violation of this right. The “Al-Masry Al-Youm” website reported details regarding the death of their 19-year-old daughter, Naira’s family, whose case was known in the media as “the student at Al-Arish University.”
According to Naira’s father, his wife received a call from his daughter informing her that she was suffering from vomiting, but an official in the university city informed the family an hour later that the daughter had been taken to the hospital, asking them to come.
According to what Naira’s mother told Al-Masry Al-Youm, he received news of his daughter’s death after arriving at the hospital, after she entered a coma.
The father explained that he was not aware of any disputes between her and her colleague, and that he believed the death was natural.
Later, the father learned from some of Naira’s colleagues that the deceased had entered into a dispute with a colleague of hers who threatened to expose her after she took pictures of her in the bathroom, and asked her to apologize in a group via the university’s “WhatsApp” application, so as not to expose her. The daughter was afraid and agreed and apologized through the group.
The father pointed out that his daughter was fasting on the day of her death, and that she was poisoned after breaking the fast.
For its part, the Egyptian newspaper “Al-Shorouk” quoted an official university source at Al-Arish University as saying that Naira, whose details and suicide are being circulated by social media users, is true, and that the student took “a grain” (an insecticide widely used in rural areas of Egypt to preserve grains and protect crops from Caries and rodents), and she moved to the hospital and died there.
The Cairo 24 website published a photo of a document that it said was the medical report on the condition of the young woman, Naira, which confirms that she was admitted to the hospital in a state of “severe fatigue as a result of ingesting a toxic substance.” She arrived “suffering from a disorder in the level of consciousness and a sharp drop in blood circulation, and her pulse was weak as a result.” She was ingested of an unknown toxic substance.
