Tragedy Strikes as 10-Year-Old Boy Dies from Rabid Dog Bite in South Sulawesi
Sidrap, South Sulawesi – A 10-year-old boy, identified as MA, tragically lost his life after being bitten by a rabid dog in Compong Village, Pituriase District, Sidrap Regency, South Sulawesi. The incident highlights the lack of education on the dangers of rabies and the importance of vaccination in the region.
MA was rushed to Nene Mallomo Hospital in Pangkajene Sidrap on Saturday (24/6/2023) but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. His body has since been laid to rest in a public cemetery near his home.
According to the victim’s mother, Muliati, her son was bitten by a rabid dog several months ago. He received initial treatment at a local health center for an open wound on his leg. Despite experiencing a fever, MA was only treated on an outpatient basis.
“It was almost six months since he was bitten. He was playing when a dog bit him on the leg. The wound was severe, so we took him to the health center. There was no reaction or effect, and he seemed healthy as usual. He only fell sick during the fasting month, and he also had a fever,” Muliati shared on Sunday (25/6/2023).
As time went on, MA’s condition deteriorated, and he became bedridden, unable to leave the house or even urinate without difficulty.
“Before he died, he rarely left his room. He had trouble sleeping at night and experienced pain while urinating. He could only urinate little by little,” Muliati added.
Concerned about her child’s worsening condition, Muliati took him to the Puskesmas, a local health center. However, due to the severity of his symptoms, he was referred to Nene Mallomo Hospital. Tragically, MA was declared dead shortly after his arrival.
Muliati expressed her regret, stating, “Last Friday, we took him to the Puskesmas because we thought he had a normal fever.”
This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the importance of educating communities about the dangers of rabies and the necessity of timely vaccination. Authorities and health organizations must work together to raise awareness and ensure that proper measures are in place to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
