A cyclist died on the Verbindingsweg in Kapelle-op-den-Bos on Sunday afternoon. The victim moved from the right lane for an unknown reason and was hit by a car coming from the opposite direction. A second rider was then seriously injured when everyone hit the brakes.
According to the initial findings, the victim was part of a group of bicycle tourists who rode on the bridge on the Verbindingsweg towards Kapelle-Op-den-Bos. “The victim moved so he ended up in the other lane,” said police chief Alain Meerts from the KLM police area (Kapelle-op-den-Bos, Londerzeel and Meise). The 50-year-old man from Grimbergen crossed the white line, after which he was hit by a car coming from the opposite direction. The man in his fifties was brought back, but died on the spot.

“The man ended up in a passenger car driven by a 20-year-old woman,” says Sabine Lievens from the Halle-Vilvoorde public prosecutor’s office. “She gave a negative breath and saliva test after the accident. A witness or – depending on the rider having completed her streak.”
“Tomorrow the other people from the cycling group will be heard and in the meantime we will also check if there are camera images from the bridge,” said Sabine Lievens from the Halle-Vilvoorde public prosecutor’s office.

A second cyclist was also injured following the crash. Leo Van den Brande from Meise had a bad accident when all the cycling flu hit the brakes after the crash. He was taken to hospital and is currently in intensive care.
“My brother doesn’t remember much,” said the mayor of Meise, Gerda Van den Brande (N-VA). “It appears that one of the men started to leave, after which the other went on and ended up on the other side of the road, where he was hit. The whole group then started to brake and then Leo fell. He suffered, among other things, eight broken ribs and a collapsed lung. Luckily he was wearing a helmet.”
