Jakarta –
Starting from ‘just a cold’, a 5 year old girl from Australia, Cathy Kassis, died. Apparently, the disease that infected the boy’s body at that time was not a common cold, but a bacterial infection with Strep A, a bacteria that can cause mild to severe respiratory and skin infections.
Unfortunately, when the family realized that Cathy’s symptoms were symptoms of a bacterial infection, it was too late. Although Cathy’s stepfather, Justin Sutton, said that since the early stages of Cathy experiencing symptoms, her family’s concern has increased because Cathy’s condition continues to worsen.
Initially, the doctor explained to Cathy’s family that the infection Cathy was experiencing was just a simple viral infection. The doctor also asked the family to remain calm.
“After three days he lost his voice completely, so we were obviously a little worried,” explained Sutton, quoted by the New York Post, Monday (11/9/2023).
“But the doctors just said it was a viral infection and we kept doing what we were doing and let it run its course.”
Again Receives Wrong Diagnosis
After the doctor said this, Cathy’s condition worsened. Over time, Cathy had difficulty breathing. That’s when the family decided to take Cathy to the hospital.
“He wasn’t breathing properly. It felt like an asthma attack or like watching someone with emphysema trying to breathe,” Sutton said.
The wrong diagnosis occurred again at that moment. Again, the hospital said that Cathy had a viral infection and could be sent home immediately.
Then at home on August 28, Cathy’s lips turned blue. The mother immediately called an ambulance.
“He fainted and passed out and collapsed in his arms,” Sutton said.
Declared Brain Dead
Suttin performed CPR while calling emergency services for about 15 minutes, then paramedics came and took over. Cathy was then flown by police helicopter to Westmead Children’s Hospital.
But 78 minutes later CPR was completed and Cathy’s parents received the worst news of their lives.
“They told us he was declared brain dead. The coroner found the cause of death to be strep A, and Westmead found out through a simple throat swab” said Sutton.
