The Indian cobra (Naja naja), also known as the spectacled cobra, Asian cobra, or binoselate cobra, is a species of cobra, a venomous snake in the family Elapidae. This species is native to India, and is a member of the ‘big four’ species responsible for the most snakebite cases in India.

Indian cobra especially contains a potent post-synaptic neurotoxin and cardiotoxin. The venom can paralyze muscles, and in severe bites it can cause respiratory failure or cardiac arrest. The components of the venom include enzymes such as hyaluronidase which increase the spread of the poison. Symptoms of poisoning can occur between fifteen minutes and two hours after the bite.
