An amazing incident occurred from a 19 year old man in China who died after donating blood plasma 16 times. The young man was identified as Zhao Wei, from Xinzhou City, China, who died on January 15, 2024.
The next day, his father, Zhao Zhijie, made a surprising discovery in Wei’s room. Zhijie found receipts of Wei’s large plasma donations between May and December last year.
The receipts showed that Wei had donated plasma 16 times in just eight months before his death. Even in the shortest periods, he gave two donations in 12 days, up to three donations in one month.
Blood plasma is collected through an automated process that separates plasma from other blood components.
The medical report on January 5 also revealed that he was diagnosed with palpitations, severe anemia and blood disorders.
“I feel too weak to do anything,” Wei said in one of the messages sent to his friend on the day he died South China Morning PostSunday (21/4/2024).
Although blood donation is usually done voluntarily, donating blood plasma in China can be done as a commercial activity for compensation. This procedure is usually done in private companies and is just a plasma collection.
Each time he donates plasma, Wei receives at least 260 to 300 yuan (Rp. 593 thousand – Rp. 585 thousand). As a result of this incident, Wei’s father asked for responsibility for the plasma collection company.
“They forced these young people to sell blood often, so that my son often gave long-term blood donations. As a result, he had poor blood regeneration and finally death. They must be held accountable,” Zhijie said.
Wei’s blood plasma donation was deemed to have broken the rules. The regulations of the National Health Commission in 2021 state that a person can donate blood only once every three months and plasma donations can be given at 14-day intervals with a maximum donation of 24 times a year.
