New York-Many of us eat fish. However, not all fish are edible. Pufferfish is such an inedible fish. A 46-year-old man named Magno Sergio Gomez of Brazil became ill after eating a pufferfish and died later. The New York Post reported that the tragic incident took place in Aracruz, Spartito Santa, Brazil. Myrian Gomez Lopez, Magno Sergio Gomez’s sister, said she never once saw her brother clean or eat a pufferfish.
Some reports say that Magno was gifted the poisonous pufferfish by an unnamed friend. The pufferfish was washed and cut by Magno and his friend. Then its liver and intestines were removed and fried in lemon juice. Then they both ate the fish. Within an hour, both expressed their discomfort. Myrian Gomez Lopez says Magno started to feel numbness in his mouth at this point. As the discomfort worsened, Magno drove himself to the hospital within eight minutes. By this time, however, the discomfort had intensified and within eight minutes he suffered a heart attack and collapsed. Reports also say that he died a few days later.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control reports that Magno was infected with tetrodotoxin, a toxin harmful to humans found in the liver and reproductive organs of pufferfish, when the carcass was autopsied. More than 1,000 times more lethal than cyanide, this toxin disrupts nerve signals to muscles. The body then loses strength, leading to paralysis and death.
After reaching the hospital, Magno collapsed and was admitted to the ICU. Magno died on January 27 after spending 35 days in the hospital’s ICU. Meanwhile, the toxicity affected the whole body and the body became weak, while the epilepsy affected the brain severely. Magno died but his friend survived. But the report also indicated that his legs were suffering from neurological problems. According to reports, the friend still has difficulty walking. Meanwhile, puffer fish is eaten in Japan. But reports also say that it was cooked after cleaning it in a special way.
