The two ex-prisoners Ludwig Tolumov and Ivan Serafimov-Sladkoto attack a helpless couple in love in the dark. Sevgin Myumyunov was killed, and his girlfriend Ruzhdie Zekiria was raped, stabbed and dumped half-dead. The tragedy took place in the Plovdiv village of Byala Reka in the middle of 2000. “Bulgaria Today” recalls this.
The ill-fated evening begins with merriment. On May 13, 2000, 19-year-old Ruzhdie and 20-year-old Sevgin decided to go to a disco in the “Mogilata” complex, near the Dimitrovgrad village of Varbitsa. They leave, but have to stop at a gas station near the village of Byala Reka to refuel the car. Twenty minutes after midnight they see a peaceful place and stop to admire each other. Then the unthinkable happens.
Surprisingly, two male silhouettes appear out of the darkness. Tolumov and Sladkoto break the glass, hit Sevgin with several hooks and pull him out of the car. They pounce on Ruzhdie. The boy does everything in his power to stop them, which the criminals don’t like. They get mad, start beating him, then shoot him in the back and temple. They tell the girl that they just put him to sleep and he will wake up in a few hours. They ransacked Ruzhdie and took the gold earrings and rings, as well as the phone. Then they threw Sevgin’s body into the roadside bushes.
The rapists put the shocked Ruzhdie into the car. They take her to the “St. Ilia” chapel in the village of Byala Reka. There they beat her, tear her clothes and take turns raping her. After the brutal gag, she was stabbed eight times in the neck, chest and abdomen. They drench her all in blood and wash themselves, thinking they have finished her.
It turns out that the knife did not affect the carotid artery and Ruzhdie survived. She crawls for several hours until she finally reaches the road. In the early morning of May 14, around 7 o’clock, a policeman from Parvomai goes to work and notices the victim. He rushes to help and manages to hear Ruzhdiye say with all her might that she was attacked and falls unconscious again. The policeman takes her to a nearby hospital and places a guard outside her room. During this time, the uniformed men return to the crime scene and discover Sevgin’s body.
Ruzhdie regains consciousness, manages to make descriptions of his attackers. They put together a computer profile of the two rapists. Tolumov’s turns out to be extremely accurate. During the interrogation, Ruzhdiye recalls with difficulty the beginning of the nightmarish night – “What scared me the most was that they attacked us without saying a word, as if they knew in advance exactly what they were going to do.”
The uniformed officers persistently investigate, but fail to find any clues from the bandits, only their descriptions are available to them. The perpetrators are reassured that they will not be caught and continue with the raids. At some point, tension and mistrust begin to emerge between them. The two quarrel violently while traveling in a stolen car. Tolumov suggests that they stop because he suspects that his aver wants to cleanse him. They stop, Tolumov leaves Sladkoto no chance, pulls out a gun and blasts him. He puts his body in the trunk and throws it into a roadside ditch. Then he starts the car.
Everything unraveled when, on June 20, they were shooting a film near the village of Tsarimir. A man and woman come across a dead body, approximately 40 years old. The victim has multiple gunshot wounds. From the fingerprints, forensic experts found that it was Ivan Serafimov-Sladkoto. The police began a series of interrogations of all of Sladkoto’s whereabouts. They train nine people consecutively. To the cops’ surprise, two of them fit Ruzhdie’s description. One turns out to be Ludwig Tolumov, who gets life behind bars.
The killer soaks the dead ortak
Only a month after the attack on Ruzhdie and Sevgin, Myumyunov and Sladkoto stopped the car of two German tourists. Christian Herlem is killed and Heidi Collomb is raped and killed. Her skull was found in a wreckage, and parts of her body were scattered in the surrounding area. Tolumov tries to distance himself from the case – “I found out from Ivan that he attacked a couple of Germans near Pavel Banya. He threw the man into the abyss, and raped and pushed the woman into the ravine.” In this way, Tolumov tries to get rid of himself by soaking his aver Sladkoto, whom he subsequently liquidates.
