Tragic Case of May Ashford: Misdiagnosed Brain Tumor Leads to Delayed Surgery and Death

May Ashford (71) from Blackpool in Great Britain was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2010, after suffering from headaches and seizures.

A series of MRI scans showed that the tumor was growing. Nevertheless, the 71-year-old was not offered surgery until five years later.

It writes Sky News.

Had a stroke

Ashford later died of a stroke.

According to the country’s health authorities, who have investigated the death, Ashford died as a result of not being offered surgery in time.

The investigation determined that healthcare personnel did not follow up the MRI scans well enough.

Experts say Ashford should have been operated on at least three years earlier, before the tumor had grown large enough to affect several areas of the brain.

– Led for four years

It was May Ashford’s husband, Alan Ashford, who complained about the matter to the ombudsman.

He says the family is left without answers.

– My wife suffered terribly from the consequences of the tumor for more than four years. It was obvious to us in the family when we read the MRI reports that the tumor was extremely serious, he tells Sky News.

And adds:

– The tumor had to be removed before it came into contact with the artery in the neck. That it was not done is a great mystery to us.

– Not the only one

Ombudsman Rob Behrens says the case is an important reminder to improve work with MR images.

“Unfortunately, our case management shows that Ashford is not the only person who has lost his life due to errors related to scans and X-rays,” he tells Sky News.

A spokesman for Lancashire Teaching Hospitals acknowledges the findings of the health authority’s report and admits they failed in their treatment of May Ashford.

– We have given our unreserved apologies to the husband, says the spokesperson.
