Rescuers had to work on several cars, to the point of cutting through the metal of a vehicle to get inside.
It was not immediately clear what caused the crash, but detectives said one of the drivers involved was traveling west near a shopping center at high speed. The car allegedly at high speed collided with three other vehicles, leaving eight victims.
Three people died in the crash, police said, and five others were injured. Two of the injured sustained serious injuries, according to police. Two others were expected to recover, while the other was released from the hospital a short time later.
Public works personnel were seen cleaning up the area for hours after the accident, which left pieces of metal and debris strewn across the pavement. The crash and clearance caused major traffic jams while the highway was closed for police activity.
An investigation is ongoing.
