One person has been killed and at least seven people have been injured in a cable car accident near the Turkish resort of Antalya.

The accident occurred after one of the poles supporting the cable car fell. A cabin then crashed into that pole, causing the occupants to fall out onto the mountainside below the cable car. This was reported by Minister Yerlikaya of the Interior on social media.

A 54-year-old Turkish man died in the accident. Six Turkish people were injured, and one person from Kyrgyzstan. They were flown by helicopter to hospitals or are still being treated on the mountainside.

Fixed for six hours

The cable car was stopped shortly after the accident. About 184 people were trapped in the 25 other cabins. Many of them, about 135 people, were still trapped in their cabins six hours after the accident, awaiting rescue by helicopters.

The Tunektepe Cable Car takes visitors from the popular Konyaalti Beach to the top of Tunektepe Hill, 618 meters above sea level. There is a viewpoint over the city of Antalya. Many Turks were still free on Friday, as part of the festivities after the fasting month of Ramadan.

It is not yet known how the load-bearing pole could fall, the public prosecutor of the city of Antalya has started an investigation into the circumstances. The cable car is run and maintained by Antalya Municipality.
