At least 20 people were killed, including two children, as a result of a bus falling from a bridge on Tuesday evening in the city of Venice, northern Italy, according to a spokesman for the city’s municipality.
According to firefighting services, the bus caught fire after it fell from a bridge linking the Mestre and Marghera regions.
“A tragedy struck our community this evening,” Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said in a post, describing the scene at the crash site as “horrific.”
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her “deepest condolences.”
A statement issued by it said, “I am in contact with Mayor Luigi Brugnaro and (Transport Minister) Matteo Salvini in order to follow up on developments in this tragedy.”
